Define the investment objective in operational terms. A factory may want to serve a stable daytime base load, reduce exposure to a specific energy cost, support an energy-management plan, prepare for future storage or coordinate generation with a new production schedule. List the decision criteria and the person who will approve each one.
Collect bills and available interval or demand data for a representative period. Map shifts, shutdowns, maintenance days, seasonal peaks and expected expansion. Production records can help explain changes in electrical use, but commercially sensitive information should be controlled. A design based on one recent bill may overstate or understate the load available to use solar generation.
Keep efficiency and generation decisions connected but distinct.
