CCTV installation cost in Kenya depends on what you need to see, how long recordings must be retained and how difficult the site is to install. A camera count alone is not a reliable quotation. Four cameras covering a compact shop and four cameras covering a long driveway can require different lenses, cabling, mounts, storage and labour. Start with a coverage plan and an itemised proposal before comparing totals.
What should a CCTV quotation include?
Ask for the camera models and quantities, recorder model, usable recording capacity, cable type and estimated length, power equipment, mounting accessories, installation labour and commissioning. The proposal should identify taxes, transport, access equipment, any recurring software charges and exclusions. If remote viewing is required, state who supplies the internet connection and who owns the administrative account. A low headline price becomes difficult to compare when these items are omitted.
Compare the job your cameras must perform
Write down the required outcome for each view: recognise a person at an entrance, review activity at a till, observe a loading bay or monitor a boundary. Those are different tasks. Ask the installer to explain image detail, distance, lighting and obstructions for each position. A wide overview can show movement without capturing a usable face. Night-time performance should be checked at the actual scene rather than inferred from a product label.
Nairobi property types that change installation cost
For offices in Westlands, Parklands, Upper Hill and the CBD, confirm landlord approval, ceiling access and permissible working hours. For apartments in Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Lavington, South B and South C, shared entrances, parking ramps and cable routes between floors affect scope. Shops in Eastleigh, Ngara, Gikomba and the city centre may need work staged around trading. Warehouses in Industrial Area, Ruaraka and along Mombasa Road need a plan for mounting height, loading activity and safe access equipment. These are survey considerations, not fixed prices for a neighbourhood.
Storage, backup power and future expansion
Ask how the proposed recording period was calculated, including camera resolution, recording schedule, frame rate and compression. Agree whether continuous or event-based recording is appropriate for each view. Specify which components remain operational during a power interruption; a powered camera is not enough if the recorder or network switch has stopped. If more cameras are planned, check spare recorder channels, storage expansion and switch capacity now. Oversizing every component adds cost, but leaving no expansion route can also create avoidable replacement work.
Use this comparison before accepting the cheapest quote
Compare proposals against the same camera positions, recording period and acceptance checks. Request written equipment substitutions rather than accepting an unspecified “equivalent.” Clarify workmanship support, equipment warranty terms, call-out charges and responsibility for failed third-party internet access. What to test before handover
Walk through every camera view in daylight and, where relevant, darkness. Replay a sample recording, export a short clip and verify that timestamps agree. Confirm that the designated owner can access the system without depending on an installer’s personal account. Review authorised users and disable unnecessary access. Keep the equipment schedule, configuration backup and support contact with the property’s records.
